For five years we have been working on creating a blend that captures the essence of the Cape. We were always convinced that Pinotage, being uniquely South African, should be involved. However, the dilemma was the choice of an ideal blending partner.
Our aim was to allow the sunlight to show. In keeping with the modern trend we intended to produce a rich wine with deep colour and loads of ripe fruit and soft tannins. Merlot is ideally suited to achieving this result in South Africa and after experimentation we discovered it blended very well with Pinotage.
By 2002 we had identified a block of Merlot that was most compatible with Pinotage and we had determined that between 30 % - 35 % Pinotage resulted in the most harmonious wine. This Cape blend now has enough class to be considered a worthy addition to our Cellar Door range. The 2002 Vintage was warm which guaranteed optimum ripeness and therefore another ideal vintage for a Cape Blend.
Wine Cellaring: Although the wine can be enjoyed now it has the potential to keep for 7 to 8 years.
Tasting Notes: The wine demonstrates an attractive deep red colour with forthcoming aromas of berry fruit and spice. The oak gently penetrates the bouquet with hint of vanilla and tobacco. On the palate the wine is well balanced with soft tannins and a rich long finish.
