Around the world, producers are searching for new and innovative varieties while Rhine Riesling, one of the most respected varieties, is being forgotten. At Villiera we still believe in Rhine Riesling, but we have recognised that a style change is necessary to find support amongst modern wine drinkers. Riesling berries are small and soft skinned, which naturally results in higher levels of phenols, particularly if skin contact is allowed. The demand for fruit driven wines over the last ten years, has caused producers to pick ripe and allow skin contact, resulting in harder wines. Residual sugar has been used to balance the wines, and we end up drinking slightly sweet, rich, aromatic Rieslings that develop extreme oiliness with age. However, the purist knows that Riesling is capable of a drier, lighter style that is crisp and refreshing. This style, although made from Rhine Riesling picked less ripe, is intensely fragrant and spicy, with a structure that ensures longevity.
Wine Cellaring: Although the wine is drinkable young, it will mature for up to six years from vintage. Tasting Notes: The 2004 Rhine Riesling was made from fruit picked at optimum ripeness without any botrytis influence. The wine is bone dry in style, and it demonstrates the elegance and finesse that is typical of the variety. The intense bouquet displays dried apricot and cinnamon with a hint of cloves.
