Greg's Vintage 2002
Cape of Good Hope
By fortifying a fermenting wine with barrel-aged brandy we stop the wildly raging, spontaneous fermentation in its tracks.
This is the traditional South African way of weaving the ethereal flavours and aromas of fermentation into the typically dense, complex and tannic structure of our handmade reds.
This is a wine from the 2002 vintage and is made up of hand-picked Mourverdre 21%, Shiraz 15%, Carignan 15%, Cabernet Sauvignon 15%, Barbera 8%, Tannat 7%, Sangiovese 6% and Souzao 5%.
All the grapes were de-stalked separately and cold-soaked until everything was picked. They were then fermented and fortified together, before maturation for 10 months in small oak barrels.
Tasting note
Alcohol: 18.5%
Grapes picked at 28° Balling and fortified at 10° Balling with Brandy. Shiraz from Tulbagh (single vineyard)
Nose : Rum & raisin , Shiraz caracter comes through strongly- nuttiness, sundried tomatoes pesto , Stewed fruit, leather, smoky, vanilla cigarillos.
Palate: Still young , the alcohol is still hiding some fruit. Nice spice. Smokiness carried through with dark red fruit.
